Kelp aquaculture has generated significant interest in Massachusetts as a potential opportunity to diversify coastal economies, support working waterfronts, and provide environmental benefits. This report examines the experiences of Massachusetts kelp growers, available scientific data, and current market conditions. The findings suggest that while sugar kelp (Saccharina latissima) can be grown in Massachusetts, significant challenges remain. Overall, this report suggests that future development of seaweed aquaculture in Massachusetts should focus on improving site selection, supporting market development, expanding processing capacity, and reducing uncertainty through applied research and pilot projects.
